Comfort starts at the sink. A mature woman gently pats her face dry with a soft towel.

Skin feels tight after washing? Start here.

Cleansing & routine · 4 minute read

That tight feeling after washing is worth paying attention to. Before adding another serum, try a simpler way to cleanse and check what your skin is telling you.

You have washed your face, patted it dry and reached for your moisturiser almost before putting down the towel. Your cheeks feel pulled. Smiling makes you notice them.

If this sounds familiar, start with the wash itself. September is a useful moment to review your routine, but a change of season does not mean you need a new cupboard of skincare. A small adjustment may be much more useful than another layer.

Check what actually happens

“Tight” describes a feeling; it does not tell you the cause. Before deciding that you need a richer cream, notice when the discomfort starts. Is it immediately after rinsing? After a particular serum? Or later in the afternoon?

You do not need a magnifying mirror or an elaborate skin diary. Write down three things tonight: what you used, when your skin felt uncomfortable and where you felt it. “Cheeks, after cleansing, before moisturiser” gives you something specific to work with.

Avoid testing five explanations at once. If you change the cleanser, add an acid and buy a new cream on the same evening, you will have very little idea which change helped or made things worse.

Make your next cleanse gentler

Choose a gentle cleanser and use lukewarm water. The British Skin Foundation recommends a gentle, hydrating cleanser for dry skin. Read its skincare guidance.

Use light fingertips rather than scrubbing tools, then rinse and pat with a soft towel. You do not need friction to prove you have done a thorough job. Gloucestershire Hospitals' advice for people with skin conditions also recommends tepid water and patting dry rather than rubbing. Read the NHS trust's skin-care advice.

Follow your cleanser's own directions, particularly if it is designed to remove makeup. If you wear eye makeup, use an appropriate remover as directed; avoid repeatedly rubbing the same area because you are in a hurry.

Make the easy change practical. Put the soft towel within reach. Turn the tap down before your hands are wet. Leave the cleansing brush in the cupboard for now. A routine is easier to adjust when the bathroom is set up to support it.

Give moisturiser a proper place

For dry skin, moisturising promptly after washing can help retain water. Use a product you already tolerate, following its directions, rather than waiting until your face feels very dry. The NHS also advises applying emollients promptly after washing. For dry, itchy skin, the British Association of Dermatologists advises choosing simple moisturisers without perfume. Read its advice on dry, itchy skin.

Check the experience as well as the texture. Can you apply it comfortably? Does the routine fit the time you have? A lovely jar is only useful if the product works for your skin and you are happy using it.

For an everyday moisturiser, once skin is comfortable, you can explore Imperial Moisturiser. Check its ingredients against any sensitivities; a fragranced cosmetic is not a treatment for irritated skin. If your existing moisturiser suits you, there is no need to replace it simply because autumn has arrived.

Your three-evening check-in

Use these prompts over the next few evenings. This is an observation exercise, not a promise that skin will recover in three days.

  • Before washing: What did I wear today, and what needs removing?
  • During washing: Am I following the directions, or rubbing and repeating from habit?
  • Afterwards: Does my skin feel comfortable with my usual, tolerated moisturiser?
  • Next morning: Is the discomfort settling, unchanged or getting worse?

Do not keep applying a product that causes a reaction to complete the exercise. Stop the suspected product. If dryness is painful, persistent or accompanied by cracking, bleeding or a recurring rash, speak to a pharmacist or GP rather than trying to solve it with more cosmetics.

Your useful September goal can be very simple: a face wash that fits your day, followed by skin you are comfortable leaving alone.

With care, the HIGHBORN London team
