Top Organic Foods to Beat the Blues

Has this ever happened to you?

One day you feel like Freddy Mercury whipping through the day singing ‘Don’t stop me nowww, I’m having such a good time … I’m having a balllll …’ full of energy, literally bouncing around like a flea! 

Another day (for no particular reason) you’ll feel on a bit of a ‘downer’ ... like you're wading through treacle just getting down the stairs in the morning!

 

A momentary wave of stress, worry, sadness or loss of energy…it can happen at the worst of times and often we just end up going going 'through it'.

I’ve been there. We have all been there.

So what do you do?

Grab a bag of Doritos (caught me, my fave …) and munch your way through them while knocking back a can of coke? A lovely momentary wallow in deliciousness but these won’t pull you out of the ‘funk’! If anything they’ll make you worse!

Of course if it’s something your facing all the time you should see some help from your doctor but if it’s an occasional thing then what can you do?

Grab some superfoods!

Yes, they’re all the rage and yes I suspect a lot of their amazing benefits are exaggerated BUT there’s no doubt you’ll feel better focusing on these that sugar, saturated fat and carb loaded ‘junk food’!

They really help me; perhaps they’ll help you!

Here are some of my favourites:

  1. Nuts … Instead of opening up another bag of crisps, snack on some raw or roasted nuts….think cashews, almonds, Brazil nuts and walnuts. These are high in fats, B vitamins and magnesium that will boost your mood and even ease off anxiety.

  2. Juicy Berries … Who doesn’t love fresh and sumptuous blueberries and strawberries sprinkled on top of cereal or a cup of yoghurt. These berries are bursting with immunity-boosting antioxidants. Did you know it’s also the highest foods with antioxidants which significantly improves symptoms of depression?? Store them in the freezer for a summer pick-me-up treat.

  3. Leafy Greens … Low energy is just one of the symptoms with feeling blue, healthy green veggies are just one of the ways to feel a burst of energy. From broccoli, spinach, kale to Brussels sprouts—these can be added to any salad with some vinegar and extra-virgin olive oil for a quick snack.

  4. Tomatoes … Tomatoes are rich in folic acid and alpha-lipoic acid which in turn helps with feeling low. Folate deficiency is one of the reasons why it becomes harder and harder to get out of the low state of mind. Who knew tomatoes could stabilise our mood?

  5. Beans … For an easy lunch option or if you can’t find the energy to make dinner, baked beans are a healthy option to fill your fibre and magnesium intake. Beans make a hearty meal without the effort. I love it for stabilising blood sugar levels if I haven’t eaten all day…which can tend to happen with low energy.

  6. Dark Chocolate … Ok now we are getting to the good stuff! Did you know antioxidants in chocolate lowers the stress hormone called cortisol? Dark chocolate contains a lower amount of sugar, which in turn the highest cacao content brings in the most antioxidants.

Before you know it, these foods will be helping you fight against feeling at your lowest.

While we have all fought our inner demons, overcoming them helps us to truly learn more about ourselves.
