When it’s windy, chilly and the air is dry outside it’s easy to see how a whole world of skin issues that can come from nowhere during the winter months.
So, if you’re experiencing the repercussions of the harsher weather right now, here are five need-to-know ways to help overcome winter skin blues and FAST …
Facial redness that’s patchy and makes your skin feel rough or bumpy is a common complaint during winter. It occurs when wind and dry air do a number on the important protective layer that sits on top of your skin (aka your skin’s barrier), breaking it down and therefore allowing vital moisture to escape. This makes your skin prone to irritation, rashes, itching and patches of redness.
Try This: Over-stimulating your skin with harsh scrubs and super-potent skincare productions is a big no-no here. The key is to be gentle with your skin and treat it with extreme care and attention, so stick with a basic routine that contains lots of hydrating and moisturising ingredients like shea butter, glycerin and botanical oils.
Wash your face with lukewarm water and our Crystal Cleanser morning and night, then try Organic Hydration Gel which is ideal for reducing inflammation and calming irritated, red skin.
The most common of all winter skin complaints is dryness – especially if you have mature skin which is thinner, produces less sebum and is unable to retain moisture as efficiently as younger skin.
Your face, of course, is in constant battle with the elements and is therefore extremely vulnerable to dryness, but you must also be vigilant with areas of your skin that contain fewer sebaceous glands. These include your hands, back, arms and legs.
Try This: Moisturise, moisturise and moisturise some more. Apply Imperial Moisturiser or Natural Luminosity Body Butter after every time you wash your face, hands and body and if there are certain areas that are particularly dry, try smoothing Organic Age-Defying Facial Oil on top of your moisturiser.
Pro Tip: Now’s also the time to take check of your routine and cut back on unnecessary chemicals like parabens, sulphates and synthetic fragrances. These suck away important oils and cause a real upset to the balance of your skin. The good news is ALL HIGHBORNs are free of these harsh ingredients so you’ve no worries there.
Dehydrated, winter skin is all thanks to a lack of humidity. Little moisture in the air equals limited moisture available to your skin which is super important for helping to keep your skin soft, supple and hydrated.
Try This: Go big on humectants which are skincare ingredients like aloe, hyaluronic acid and glycerin that help draw moisture into your skin. Our Pre-Eminent Beauty Serum is great as it contains all three of the aforementioned, plus vitamin E and plant-based oils to help seal in all that delicious moisture.
Apply it twice daily to damp skin before moisturising for the best, most hydrating results.
A humidifier is also a great investment for your bedroom. Set it to around 60 percent to help replenish moisture in your skin as you sleep.
Skin that’s prone to acne breakouts often find they worsen in winter due to dryness and dehydration. This might sound like a contradiction in terms, but when skin lacks moisture, the barrier function becomes compromised and your skin is less able to fight bacteria.
Oily skin also over-produces sebum in an attempt to balance out dry, wintry conditions. This causes excess oils which can block your pores and spawn those inevitable pimples.
Try This: If your skin’s going haywire, first, keep your pillows, towels and mobile phone as clean as possible… and stop touching your face. All of these things transfer bacteria to your skin – bad news! Also, ensure you keep your skin thoroughly cleansed and moisturised and try gentle, regular exfoliation with Natural Luminosity Scrub to boost cellular turnover and help keep pores clean and clear.
Pro Tip: Natural Element Clay Mask is also a great shout for deeply cleansing troublesome skin while balancing excess oils without drying out your complexion. It’s a total winner!
Dry, flaky lips are an extremely common issue in the winter. And this is, for sure, down to low humidity levels which suck moisture from your skin. But that’s not all.
In fact, chapped lips are mainly thanks to the anatomy of the skin in this area which, unlike the rest of your body (except the palms of your hands and soles of your feet) lacks oil-producing glands to keep itself naturally moisturised.
Try This: Superior Lip Butter – simple as! Apply it as often as needed and always before bed. Also, try gently exfoliating your lips once a week with a soft toothbrush. Work the brush in light, circular motions over your lips for 20 seconds or so after cleaning your teeth. This removes dead skin cells and helps your lip balm penetrate the skin more efficiently!
