Getting the best results from your skincare regime is not just about what you choose to apply - How you apply your products is equally important. Now that may sound simple enough, but there are many common mistakes that stop your products from doing their job properly.
Too much, too often and too heavy-handed will actually do more harm than good.
Read on for how to get your skincare technique just right...
Your skin can only absorb so much product so applying lashings and lashings of beauty serum, for example, is not going to plump your skin any better. In fact, it’s simply a waste of time and money, and will stop your moisturiser from getting to work. That said, too little and you won't see results either.
So here's a quick portion size guide:
Crystal Cleanser - a couple of pumps for face and neck, and again for your décolletage
Diamond Toner - just two spritzes
Pre-Eminent Beauty Serum - a pea-size for face and neck and again for your décolletage
Imperial Eye Gel - a small pea-size will do both eyes
Imperial Moisturiser and Night Elixir - roughly the size of a £1 coin
Organic Age-Defying Facial Oil - just a drop or two
All our HIGHBORNs are natural, gentle on your skin with ingredients that work and specially designed for daily use (with the exception of Natural Element Clay Mask being a couple of times a week).
So yes, cleanse, tone, eye gel, serum and moisturise morning and night. Organic Age-Defying Facial Oil? Absolutely! Natural Luminosity Scrub? Yes! Regular exfoliation will really help to improve your results.
[Note: If you have sensitive or particularly dry skin, start off with a couple of times a week].
The order in which you apply your skincare should not be messed with. The simplest way to remember your sequence is that they should always be applied in order of thickness and consistency, with the thinnest going first and the thickest last. Of course cleanse, exfoliate and tone first.
Next comes your Pre-Eminent Beauty Serum which has the lowest molecular structure designed to penetrate deep into your skin. Followed by Imperial Eye Gel. Then Imperial Moisturiser and lastly Organic Age-Defying Facial Oil to lock in all that goodness. [Not forgetting your SPF, always, always last to go on].
Rule of thumb, go gently and slowly; never rub products into your skin and never use hot water to rinse. This can damage and irritate your skin. Worse yet, it can aggravate conditions like acne and rosacea, or cause inflammation.
When to massage: Cleansing and exfoliating. Dampen your skin with warm water, carefully work the product into your skin using gentle circular motions with the pads of your fingers.
When to pat: Gentle patting is best for most other products as it’s less damaging and helps the ingredients penetrate your skin better. Fingertips or the palms of your hands is up to you. We prefer fingers for thinner, more viscous products like Imperial Eye Gel and Pre-Eminent Beauty Serum and hands for thicker creams and oils.
Conquering the correct technique is worth its weight in gold. It ensures your skin benefits from the best possible results from your regime. It also means you’re not wasting awesome products simply because you weren’t applying them correctly.
